Unwanted Species Auction: Steve Higgins

Unwanted Species is an online auction organized by artist Steve Higgins in support of the Indigenous Butterfly and Pollinator Garden located on the Dalhousie University campus. The auction will be held from June 27th to July 17th and all proceeds will be donated to fund the Garden.

Performance: Ursula Johnson + Lisa Myers

July 6th 2022, Time TBA

In July, as the exhibition Plant Kingdom comes to a close, Ursula Johnson and Lisa Myers will present a performance about longing for contact, using the existence of underground networks of mycelia as a metaphor. Their performance will consider ideas of connectivity that are explored within the Gallery, in the garden, and through other forms of plant life growing on the Dalhousie campus.

Join Plant Kingdom artist Steve Higgins for an artist talk about his most recent work included in the exhibition.

BIO

Steve Higgins was born in Spokane, Washington. In 1972, Higgins graduated with a BFA Cum Laude from the University of Washington in Seattle, and an MGA from Wayne State University in Detroit. Higgins taught in various art schools in Michigan in 1972-73, and from 1974-2002, he was a professor at the University of Manitoba, School of Art, and for some time, its interim director. Since moving to Halifax in 2003, he has continued teaching part-time at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. 

Higgins has exhibited in solo and two-person exhibitions since 1972, in the United States and Canada, and group exhibitions across Canada, in Australia, Brazil, Japan, Netherlands, Spain, and the United States. His work is represented in the collections of the Canada Council Art Bank, the Winnipeg Art Gallery, Manitoba Arts Council Art Bank, Confederation Centre Art Gallery, Art Gallery of Hamilton, Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, University of Toronto Art Centre, and the State University of Potsdam, New York.

Join curator Frances Dorsey for a tour of the Plant Kingdom exhibition, followed by a walk to the new pollinator garden across campus, designed and planted in conjunction with the exhibition. Dorsey will discuss the ideas that prompted Plant Kingdom and the ways in which the artists engage the plant world through both theme and material.
The second half of the tour will take place outside, so please dress accordingly for the weather.

Musical Performance by the Legion of Flying Monkeys w/ Plant Kingdom artist David Gowman

Join Plant Kingdom artist David Gowman and his band The Legion of Flying Monkeys after Sharon Kallis’ Artist Talk for a short set in the gallery!

The Legion of Flying Monkeys (LFM) are a small but determined Vancouver protest folk-rock group playing with drums, ukulele, accordion, sometimes marimba, and curious, wooden trumpets called 'fuhorns', built by bandleader, Mr. Fire-Man (Gowman). LFM music is designed to engage, to pull the audience into a harmless, merry singalong while destroying capitalism, religion and greed.

Performance: Nettle Spinning Circle w/ Sharon Kallis

Come enjoy the new exhibition Plant Kingdom and join us in the Sculpture Court (Arts Centre, floor 2) to observe a nettle spinning learning circle hosted by artist Sharon Kallis. She will be sharing fibre processing and spinning techniques with the volunteers who aided in her project by harvesting and processing stinging nettle from TapRoot farms in the Autumn of 2021.
